YOUNG CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP
LEADERSHIP 101
FORCE: THE CAMEL PERIL
FACT #1: POWER CORRUPTS; ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY.
FACT #2: CAMELS ARE BEASTS OF ENORMOUS ENDURANCE. LITTLE WONDER THEY ARE USED FOR DESERT TRAVEL.
FACT #3: LEADERSHIP IS A GAME OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND GOAL GETTING.
Before I utilise the above facts, please digest this scenario:
TONY IS FACED WITH A PREDICAMENT. He is a young leader in one of the Christian bodies on campus. He is confused because the set of leaders under him are not overly efficient. To Tony, they are not up and doing. Tony told me that he had scolded, rebuked, and even punished those he perceived to be defaulting, but they continue to under-perform.
I'm convinced that several young christian leaders have faced or are currently facing the TONY'S PREDICAMENT.
My question: what is the way forward?
I was wise enough to quickly call at random, two or three crew members in Tony's leadership.
THEIR REPORT:
CREW MEMBER 1: "Tony is too mean. He doesn't care one bit. Would you believe that Tony has never called me to ask of my welfare? He calls me just to shout orders at me like I'm his maid."
CREW MEMBER 2: "Hmm... Tony this he is in the military. His only concern is that we meet up with leadership deadlines. I was sick some weeks back, Tony didn't even call me. For him, LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES MUST BE MET, IN SICKNESS OR IN HEALTH.
I'm sure that had I continued to interview this set of discouraged, drained and labouring leaders, more commando-like approaches employed by Tony would have surfaced.
Back to my facts...
It's possible that Tony had become intoxicated with the sweet wine of leadership power. He thinks he can crush and make alive at will. To Tony, no one has a choice to disobey his orders.
Tony listen!!! That some persons were appointed / elected to work under your leadership does not make them camels.
LEADERS ARE NOT BEASTS OF BURDEN.
THEY HAVE EMOTIONS.
THEY HAVE A CHOICE.
THEY HAVE PERSONALITIES TOO...
If Tony does not come to terms with the above, it'll only take a short while for him to realise that he can only take a horse to the water, but can NEVER force it to drink.
Jesus, the greatest leader, once said to His disciples:
John 15:15
I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
Tony listen: The best approach to play the game of leadership is to make friends out of your leaders. With your friendly influence on them, showing love, care and concern for their welfare, you are sure to harvest a greater Return Of efficiency from your leaders. Only then will it make sense when you rebuke in love.
