Matthew 3:1-2 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"
Every professional endeavour requires more than a university education, it requires real apprenticeship. In any endeavour that requires skill set, apprenticeship is necessary, no matter the name it is given, whether MENTORSHIP, internship, or whatever. And since leadership is a skill, then just reading books and theories is not enough.
This is a constantly repeated matter amongst Young Christian leaders, and it is this concept MENTORSHIP. But the problem is that most of us still don't get it yet! Some of us Young Christian leaders are like the sons of the prophet, who just want to brag about their connection to a man, as your mentor. That's why we follow a man of God and instead of getting blessed we go out with a curse like Gehazi because our eyes are on the wrong stuff! Worse still others do not have a mentor at all, (if you have read my post on the Cloud of Witnesses, you have to read in between lines and understand. I pray that the Holy Spirit grant you understanding)
We are going to point out a few reasons why as a young Christian leader, the need for a mentor is very important.
1. JESUS BEING THE WORD IN HIS EARTHLY MINISTRY STARTED OUT BY PREACHING JOHN'S MESSAGE:
Jesus went about Preaching "repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand"... I love to think Jesus has taken time to understudy John's ministry, listened to his tapes and followed his programs so much that he could effortlessly preach his message! Isn't that amazing! That even though Jesus is God, John's Messiah and even his cousin, all this factors making it even more difficult to submit to John, Jesus actually did! If Jesus Christ of Nazareth had a "mentor" "coach" or "role model " so why shouldn't we?
2. JESUS SAID "MY SHEEP HEAR MY VOICE" NOT MY LAMB (John 10):
Now in as much as
we are young christian leaders, we have to understand that experience beats anointing everytime! Yes for real! EXPERIENCE BEATS ANOINTING EVERYTIME! we need fathers to show us their scars, tell us the way they towed... Even in Eli's poor spiritual condition, without him, Samuel wouldn't have heard from God (1Sam 3:9), Moses was way more anointed than his father-in-law Jethro, but one advice from Jethro changed Moses' ministry! And the list goes on!
3. MOSES AND ELIJAH: (Matthew 17:1- 3). At the mountain of transfiguration, Moses and Elijah appeared to Jesus, my question is, why didn't Joshua and Elisha appear to Jesus? (of course Joshua completed the assignment Moses didn't finish, that is taking the people into cannan. Elisha on the other hand, had double of what Elijah had, performing double of the Miracles Elijah did!) so how come they weren't the ones to talk to Jesus... The answer is very simple : MOSES AND ELIJAH REPRESENT FATHERHOOD! Who did Joshua hand over to? Who did he raise? Who did Elisha hand over to? If not for a servant that got leprosy.
4. MENTORS COMPRESS TIME AND EXPERIENCE FOR YOU:
This particular point cannot be over emphasized, they have gone through this path, and their experiences are so valuable to us. As Solomon said, there is nothing new under the sun.
